Huawei and OPPO announced a global patent cross-licensing agreement that covers 5G and other cellular standard essential patents.

In a separate development, Samsung has transferred 98 patents it holds in the US to Huawei as part of their cross-licensing deal. These patents cover a range of technologies, including telecommunications, charging, smartphone cameras, and display technologies.

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department, said that the mutual recognition of intellectual property value between Huawei, OPPO is a major step towards fostering a positive cycle of innovation and research. Adler Feng, OPPO’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, also welcomed the agreement and stated that the company will continue to advocate for a healthy intellectual property ecosystem.

The patent cross-licensing agreements between Huawei and OPPO, and between Huawei and Samsung, have a number of potential positive outcomes for Huawei and the industry as a whole. By collaborating and sharing patented technologies, Huawei, OPPO, and Samsung may be able to bring new and improved products and services to the market more quickly and efficiently, potentially benefiting consumers and driving industry growth.

In addition, the agreements may help to reduce the risk of costly and time-consuming patent disputes between the three companies, allowing all sides to focus on their core business activities.

However, if global collaboration is blocked or discouraged, it can lead to a concentration of power and resources within a small group of companies, resulting in a monopoly in the market. This can stifle innovation and limit access to technology for the rest of the world. It is important to keep technology open and accessible to all in order to ensure that the benefits of innovation are shared widely and that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of society.
